KuDeTa Restaurant & Lounge

KuDeTa 1Kudeta Restaurant is located on the beach in the busy bustling Jalan Laksmana, in Seminyak. This place is uber funky and cool. Ku De Ta’s architectural environment is undeniably modern minimalist with its clean lines, subdued lighting, and elegant design. But it is also very much in harmony with the organic Balinese concepts of open-air, communal form that functions within the natural environments that surround it. In this case, blue ocean and green landscape. It is through this duality, manifested by a panoramic vista of the Bali Strait and a lush green lawn dotted with coconut trees, that Ku De Ta has created a peerless venue known amongst visitors from the West and the East for its food and entertainment, from sun up to sun down.

KuDeTa 2Known to regulars as simply “Ku,” this chic restaurant, bar, and beach club has become an iconic landing strip for Bali’s jet set. Cinematic in size, and outfitted with surround-sound speakers (KDT sells its own wildly popular mixed CDs,) the club is centered around a U-shaped, architectonic, dark-slated indoor dining pavilion, where Mediterranean dishes like saffron risotto with prawns, squid with cherry tomatoes, and beef carpaccio with parmesan mousse are served at white-clad tables that face the lawn and reflecting pool. The seafood plate of crab, scallops on lemongrass, barramundi fillet, baby lobster, and jumbo prawns is enormous and perfect for sharing. Three bars and two alfresco dining areas allow for plenty of space for both midnight ramblers and logo-clad socialites, who come to toast yet another hedonistic day in paradise.

KuDeTa 3Sun worshipers gather here early to secure a large day bed which seats up to 4 people and is situated facing Seminyak Beach, mere meters away. Breakfast is served from 8 a.m. with an extensive “grazing” menu featuring a wide of range of tapas for lunch and till late. As sunset nears, a crowd of consummate hipsters from across the globe begins to congregate for aperitifs while mingling to the soundtrack of the setting sun provided by an international coterie of DJs. The selections these DJs provide reflect their diverse backgrounds having been recruited from cities as diverse as Stockholm, Tokyo, and Abidjan. Whether it’s sexy downtempo, organic world music, or urban deep house, these selections exhibit yet another example of how Ku De Ta has set itself apart, by sparing no expense in providing the best in international sound for their crucial sunset sessions. It has paid off in spades, with even the New York Times commenting that, “EVERYONE who is anyone in Bali’s expatriate community shows up for sunset and cocktails at Ku De Ta.”

KuDeTa 4As twilight turns to dusk and dinner approaches, the mixed music continues with a second DJ shift that features a more soulful, supper club vibe with selections ranging from classic Sinatra to neo-Bossa Nova. Full table settings are placed in the open-air courtyard and the restaurant fills quickly with diners eager to experience the broad range of menu items prepared by the two talented Australian chefs, Asif Mehrudeen and Rob Staedler. The modern cuisine is flavorsome, yet simple and honest and once again, reflects a distinctly international palette. From a starter of wagyu beef carpaccio to ricotta ravioli to grilled live rock lobster, the choices are broad and sublime.
