Rice Padi Trekking

Rice Padi Trekking 1

Join us on Rice Padi Trekking, a walk of cultural, ecological, archaeological and natural discovery as we explore ancient ruins, lush jungle, traditional villages, local plantations and trek through rice paddies in the spectacular heartland of Bali. Our trek begins with a descent to the Elephant Cave temple complex (a number of ancient temples and reliefs dating from the Majopahit era (13th century). Trekking along the banks of large river, gurgling below, we pass through lush jungle area, a variety of fruit trees (local plantations) and pass numerous hidden temples and hermit sanctuaries (truly a photographers dream), whilst enjoying the sounds and sights of nature at its best.

Our experienced, English speaking guides will enlighten you with their knowledge of local mythology and point out the local flora (fruit and spice trees) and explain their role in Balinese society. We then trek into a local village where you can view, spectacular temples, local craftsmen at work and we visit a local school and orphanage before entering to the rice paddy section of our tour. Descending through the paddies to a large ancient relief carved into a cliff face we receive a blessing with holy water from a local priestess.

From then on its kilometers of stunning rice paddy panoramas as we trek through the fields experiencing rural Balinese going about their daily chores (have the camera handy). We see locals planting and harvesting rice, ploughing fields, tending livestock and reaping the labours of local plantations. Our guides will explain all facets of the life of the Balinese living outside tourist areas. We finish our tour with a walk through a shady bamboo grove emerging into a traditional village, where we visit a Balinese compound (Balinese home and meet the family). Walking through this village, which is isolated from tourism, gives you a feel of traditional village life and many photo opportunities.

At the end of the trek we drive a short distance to our restaurant overlooking the rice paddies where we have a sumptuous Balinese feast that includes the smoked duck/chicken that the guide books rave about. We also cater to vegetarians and have western standards of hygeine and sanitation. Many guests comment that our lunch is by far the best meal they experienced in Bali.

Our trek takes 3 – 4 hours with numerous stops and explanations (and fruit stops). It is not a difficult walk and we cater for everyone. Our groups are not large, our guides are well trained, enthusiastic, friendly and conversant in English…there is not a question they can’t answer!
